Name the decision
Replace “show me sales” with “which product group should we investigate in the next review?” The second question gives the analysis a purpose without pretending the data already contains the answer.
Choose a comparison
A number becomes more useful beside a sensible reference. Compare like periods, like channels or a clearly defined target. Note changes to scope, seasonality and missing data before interpreting a difference.
Ask for an explanation to investigate
A change tells you where to look. It does not prove a cause. List plausible explanations and the evidence needed to distinguish them. Treat an automated insight as a starting point for review.
Finish with an owner and a date
Give the next investigation an owner, a question and a review date. A useful business conversation ends with a specific next step, even when the answer is to gather better evidence.
TAKE THIS WITH YOU
Start with the decision, choose a fair comparison and turn the finding into a focused next investigation.
